Launched in June 2023, the Making Memories Scheme by Younger People with Dementia (YPWD) offers those living with young onset dementia a unique chance to create precious and joyful memories with their loved ones. The initiative is designed to fund experiences that provide families with unforgettable moments.
The Making Memories Scheme allows individuals with young onset dementia to pursue their dream experiences. Whether it’s skydiving, taking a cross-country family train journey, learning a musical instrument, or even enjoying a stunning sunset from a hot air balloon, YPWD helps to turn these wishes into reality. By funding these special experiences, the scheme enables families to build treasured memories that will last a lifetime.
How does the scheme work?
At the beginning of each month, a name is chosen at random from our Making Memories draw. Our Marketing Lead will then contact the winner to find out what they would like to do, when they would like to do it and how many people will be taking part in the experience. After this initial conversation, the experience will be arranged and the winner will receive a pack which includes a congratulatory letter, information about their experience and any tickets needed will be printed and included. We then include information to help make their day as easy as possible by providing maps, direction and details about the nearest public transport if necessary.

In October 2024, Alan became one of the scheme’s winners. Alan, who was diagnosed with early onset Vascular Dementia earlier that year, has been supported by YPWD in creating meaningful experiences despite his diagnosis. He shared:
“The diagnosis came as a bit of a shock to us all, but the truth is, sometimes life is a bugger! We have decided we’re getting on with life and living in the ‘here and now’.”
Alan has always had a passion for rugby and played until he was 50 years old at various clubs including Slough, Phoenix and Windsor. He was also Captain of the Thames Valley Police rugby team. Because of this, his wish was simple: to attend the England vs. Scotland Six Nations match with his son Charlie. With the help of YPWD, Alan and Charlie were able to attend the game at the Allianz Stadium together, creating lasting memories in the process.

Alan’s wife, Juliet, shared their joy after the game:
“Alan and Charlie had an amazing day at Twickenham yesterday! Alan obviously felt robbed by the result but Charlie was jubilant… they most certainly made amazing memories! Our entire family is indebted to YPWD for this fabulous opportunity. Alan was so animated and happy, he had a fantastic day, they both did. Thank you all so very much.”
The Making Memories Scheme continues to support families, helping them create unforgettable experiences and cherish special moments. YPWD remains committed to making a positive impact on the lives of those affected by young onset dementia, offering opportunities for individuals to live life to the fullest despite the challenges they face.
